Tensions rose in Nri community, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State, on Monday, August 4, 2025, after local youths caught individuals allegedly destroying campaign materials of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Among the vandalized items were posters featuring the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Senator Uche Ekwunife.
The early morning incident angered residents and APC supporters, who claimed the suspects were affiliated with an opposing political party. Witnesses said the vandals were seen tearing down and damaging APC posters and billboards in key areas of the community. Alert youths quickly intervened, detaining the suspects before handing them over to authorities.
Chief Emeka Okoye, a community leader, denounced the act, saying, “Such actions disrupt the democratic process and stir unrest in our peaceful community. We will not allow anything that jeopardizes our unity or the fairness of the elections.”
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspects are being interrogated. DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, noted, “We acted swiftly after receiving reports of the vandalism. Investigations are underway to determine their motives and possible accomplices.”
APC State Chairman Chief Basil Ejidike condemned the incident, describing it as an effort to disrupt the party’s campaign. “We demand a thorough investigation and justice. The APC is dedicated to a peaceful and transparent electoral process,” he said.
Nri residents have appealed for calm, urging political parties to avoid actions that could heighten tensions. Police have pledged increased surveillance in the area to ensure security ahead of the elections.
