Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has restated his promise to serve just one four-year term if elected in 2027, insisting that his commitment remains firm.
In a statement on Sunday, Obi dismissed doubts about his pledge, declaring, “My promise of a single four-year term is non-negotiable.” He suggested that critics question his resolve because they measure him by the standards of politicians who fail to keep their word.
Referencing global leaders, Obi pointed to John F. Kennedy’s enduring legacy despite his shortened presidency and Nelson Mandela’s decision to step down after one term despite calls to stay. “Mandela’s choice was a lesson in leadership—power should serve the people, not personal ambition,”he said.
The former Anambra State governor defended his stance, stating, “I know why some doubt me—they’re used to broken promises. But I am different. My one-term pledge is a firm belief that good governance doesn’t need endless time in office.”
As the 2027 elections draw closer, Obi’s vow continues to fuel debates among Nigerians about accountability and effective leadership. His supporters argue that his record proves his dedication to transparency and reform.
