Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has issued a strong warning that democracy across Africa is under severe pressure and requires immediate reform to avoid a potential collapse.
Speaking at the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation's Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana, Jonathan identified the manipulation of electoral processes as one of the most significant dangers to democratic stability on the continent.
He argued that credible elections are the essential mechanism for holding leaders accountable. In a functioning system, Jonathan stated, underperforming officials would be removed from office by voters at the ballot box.
However, he cautioned that the current reality in many nations is different, asserting that "people exploit the system to maintain their position of power even without public support."
