Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, have appealed for patience from the Nigerian public, assuring that the current economic reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration are designed to secure long-term national prosperity despite present difficulties.
The officials made these remarks during the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, held in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
This call for perseverance comes at a time of widespread economic strain, following policies such as the removal of the fuel subsidy in May 2023. That decision led to a sharp increase in petrol prices, food inflation rising above 35%, and considerable instability in the foreign exchange market.
In his address, Akpabio compared the nation’s ongoing transformation to the construction of a cathedral, stressing that such foundational work requires time, collective sacrifice, and steadfastness. He encouraged citizens not to lose faith amid challenges but to unite in working toward a better future.
Representing President Tinubu, SGF Akume reiterated the government’s dedication to economic stabilization, investment promotion, and cushioning the effects of its reform agenda. He also invited the Church to collaborate with the government on social investment programs intended to promote inclusive growth.
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, praised the Catholic Church for its longstanding role in promoting justice and democratic values. He also outlined his administration’s initiatives to reduce poverty and improve support for vulnerable groups.
The event was attended by the Apostolic Nuncio, numerous Catholic bishops, federal and state lawmakers, and hundreds of worshippers, serving as a forum for dialogue between the government and religious leaders on navigating the country’s economic challenges.
