Anambra PDP Governorship Candidate Escapes Assassination Attempt in Abuja

Jude Ezenwafor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer for the Anambra State governorship election, survived a targeted attack by armed assailants in Abuja on Friday night. The incident took place in Wuse 2 as Ezenwafor was heading home after a meeting.

Speaking from a private medical facility in Abuja on Saturday, July 19, 2025, the politician recounted the harrowing experience, calling it a "brush with death." He is undergoing medical care and preparing for surgery to extract bullets from his body. *"I'm in the hospital now. Doctors are working to remove the bullets lodged in me,"* he said, battling severe pain from his wounds.

Two companions traveling with Ezenwafor were also shot during the ambush. Their identities and current medical status have not been disclosed. The reason for the attack remains unclear, with no group taking responsibility so far.

The shooting has raised alarms over the security of election contenders as Anambra’s polls draw closer. While law enforcement has not yet commented officially, an investigation is anticipated.

Ezenwafor’s narrow escape has prompted demands for enhanced protection for political figures during the election season. The PDP has not released an official response, but supporters have rallied behind the candidate, calling for a thorough and expedited inquiry. Developments in the case are still unfolding.
