The Ebonyi State Government has shut down a private three-story hostel near Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), after it collapsed following persistent heavy rainfall. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but students’ possessions remain buried in the wreckage, and some individuals suffered minor injuries.
Authorities quickly evacuated the off-campus building to protect residents. A delegation led by the Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Ekechi Inyima, inspected the site and directed an immediate probe into the structural failure while sealing the property.
The state government is working with the Ministry of Human Capital Development, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ikwo Local Government officials, and AE-FUNAI’s management to provide temporary shelter for the displaced students.
AE-FUNAI’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom, raised concerns over the increasing number of poorly constructed private hostels and urged stronger enforcement of building codes. He commended the government’s rapid intervention, expressed relief that no lives were lost, and sympathized with the affected students. Prof. Elom also called for a detailed investigation to identify and sanction any negligent contractors, engineers, or regulators, assuring students of the university’s unwavering support.
