The Federal Ministry of Education has officially denied recent media claims suggesting an increase in the minimum admission age for Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1). In a clarification issued on July 26, 2025, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa confirmed that the entry age for JSS1 remains unchanged at 10 years, while the minimum university admission age stays at 16 years.
Dismissing the earlier report as "completely untrue,"the Ministry stressed that no such policy change had been approved. "The official position remains clear - children must be at least 10 years old before entering JSS1, and no primary school graduate should be younger than this," the statement emphasized.
Dr. Alausa further explained that the 16-year requirement for university admission is a strict standard maintained to guarantee students' proper academic and psychological preparation for tertiary education.
The Ministry advised all stakeholders, including schools, parents, and journalists, to confirm policy information through authorized government communication channels. The statement concluded by restating the government's dedication to implementing age-appropriate educational standards as part of its broader education reform initiatives.
