Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has joined the growing list of prominent voices urging the Nigerian federal government to release detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a passionate post on her verified social media handle, Edochie described Kanu as a "visionary leader" whose predictions about Nigeria’s socio-political challenges have consistently come to pass. She argued that his continued detention undermines national peace and progress.
Edochie’s Strong Words
Edochie’s lengthy statement praised Kanu’s foresight, stating:
"For peace to reign in this country, release Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu. Even if we lie from now till thy kingdom comes, his words from the beginning will keep being true. In fact, everything he said from beginning till the very end has happened just the way he earlier and rightly predicted."
She further hailed Kanu as a "champion of truth" whose commentaries on corruption, injustice, and governance have been vindicated by unfolding events.
"His words, though often unpopular with those in power, have proven to be a blueprint of Nigeria’s unfolding reality. From entrenched corruption to systemic injustices, Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu’s predictions have been vindicated by the turn and outcome of events."
Kanu’s Legal Situation
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the pro-Biafra separatist movement, has been in detention since his controversial extradition in 2021. Despite court rulings ordering his release, the federal government has maintained his incarceration, citing national security concerns.
Edochie’s statement aligns with increasing calls from political leaders, activists, and international bodies for Kanu’s release, arguing that his detention exacerbates tensions in the Southeast.
