The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) community in Awka is in mourning following the untimely death of Isabella Ajana, a first-year Law student, on July 4. This incident comes just days after another student, a 300-level Microbiology undergraduate, collapsed and died during a football match on campus.
Reports indicate that Isabella, who had Type 1 diabetes, was unable to access her medication after being locked out of her room at Emalda Hostel, a privately managed off-campus accommodation. The key had been accidentally left inside, and attempts to retrieve a spare were delayed as the person responsible for it was reportedly out of town. Some sources claim hostel staff demanded payment before releasing the spare key, though this remains unconfirmed.
By the time the room was opened on Monday, Isabella’s health had severely declined. She was taken to the university clinic before being transferred to the teaching hospital, where she later died despite showing brief signs of improvement.
University officials have initiated an investigation, with particular scrutiny on Emalda Hostel’s management practices. Authorities have pledged to review policies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
