The Nigerian government has put its aging Boeing 737-700 presidential jet up for sale in Switzerland as part of efforts to modernize the country’s official air fleet. The move follows the recent acquisition of a new Airbus A330 for presidential use and comes amid public debate over government spending and transparency in managing state assets.
The Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), purchased in 2005 during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, is currently being prepared for sale at AMAC Aerospace in Basel, Switzerland—the same firm that handled the delivery of the new Airbus.
With approximately 3,821 flight hours and 1,881 landings, the aircraft has served as the primary presidential jet for nearly two decades. Its cabin features a five-zone layout, including a private bedroom with an ensuite shower, a VIP office, conference space, and separate first-class and business-class seating for 33 passengers and eight crew members.
The jet is equipped with modern amenities such as Ka-band internet and advanced avionics, meeting international safety and communication standards.
New Airbus Replaces Aging Boeing
In July 2024, Nigeria took delivery of a refurbished Airbus ACJ330-200 to replace the older Boeing. The new aircraft includes a full bedroom suite, office space, and a mix of first-class and economy seating.
The purchase, however, drew criticism after reports suggested the government spent over ₦150 billion (approximately $100 million at the time) on the acquisition. Presidential aides defended the decision, citing rising maintenance costs and safety concerns with the older jet, which reportedly experienced technical issues during a trip to Saudi Arabia.
Condition of the Boeing Jet
Despite recent refurbishments—including upgraded seating, new carpets, and completed inspections—the government has opted to sell the Boeing. Officials maintain that the aircraft is in good condition, having been hangared and consistently maintained. However, its engines are not covered under a formal maintenance program.
No official asking price has been disclosed.
