Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the recent detention of activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore by the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Team, labeling it an "outrageous misuse of authority."
In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Atiku expressed deep concern over what he described as a clear infringement on democratic values and human rights. Sowore, a well-known rights advocate, was reportedly taken into custody under questionable conditions, with claims of police brutality during the arrest.
“The detention and alleged mistreatment of Omoyele Sowore mark a severe threat to freedom of expression and the basic rights of Nigerians,” Atiku said. “This kind of conduct by security forces is an unacceptable abuse of power and undermines the democratic principles we cherish.”
Atiku demanded Sowore’s prompt release and called for a transparent inquiry into the arrest. He also stressed the importance of law enforcement agencies adhering to legal standards and upholding citizens' rights, especially those of activists and journalists.
The former vice president’s comments have drawn strong reactions, with human rights organizations and civil society leaders joining the demand for accountability. Sowore’s arrest has renewed discussions about Nigeria’s declining tolerance for dissent and the difficulties faced by government critics.
At the time of reporting, the Nigeria Police Force had not released an official response to the arrest or the alleged use of excessive force. Attempts to reach the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Team for clarification were unsuccessful.
