Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was the Labour Party's vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has stated he is prepared to run on a ticket with Peter Obi again in the 2027 presidential race. He stipulated that his participation is contingent on significant improvements to Nigeria's electoral system.
Speaking on Friday, Baba-Ahmed declared his unwavering dedication to the nation, saying his "love for Nigeria is undying," provided the country has a functional electoral process to follow.
He confirmed his readiness to join forces with Obi, whom he described as a like-minded individual. “Absolutely, I would run with Peter Obi until he decides not to,” Baba-Ahmed stated. He also pushed back against assumptions that he would only take a deputy role, questioning why he is consistently viewed in that light.
Furthermore, Baba-Ahmed repeated his assertion that the 2023 presidential election was manipulated. He placed direct blame on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, for allegedly violating constitutional directives.
Baba-Ahmed accused Yakubu of failing to adhere to the constitutional requirement that a president must secure 25% of the vote in at least two-thirds of the states and the Federal Capital Territory. He called for a credible individual to lead INEC, not someone who would breach the nation's supreme law, holding the current chairman responsible for many of Nigeria's present difficulties.
He also criticized the judiciary for upholding INEC's decisions, maintaining that the election was rigged and its outcome inconsistent with the Nigerian Constitution. These comments highlight persistent issues regarding electoral integrity as the country looks toward the 2027 general elections.
