Lata Nna, Kwara State – Alhaji Adam Gbechi, a resident of Lata Nna in Edu Local Government Area, has been released days after being kidnapped by armed assailants.
Gbechi was abducted during a violent attack on his community, an incident that sparked fear among locals and raised concerns over rising insecurity in the region. He was safely reunited with his family on Monday morning.
His release came less than a day after the kidnappers demanded a N150 million ransom. It is still unknown whether any payment was made to secure his freedom.
A family member, who spoke anonymously, claimed that Gbechi was freed without the ransom being paid. When questioned further, the source simply stated, “No.”
Gbechi was taken from his home in Lata Nna on Sunday night alongside his brother, Alhaji Aji Hajaworo, and a married woman. While the other two captives managed to escape shortly after the abduction, Gbechi remained held as his family had publicly stated they could not afford the ransom.
The exact details of his release remain unclear, leaving many in the community puzzled.
In a separate incident, gunmen believed to be bandits killed Alhaji Gomina, a resident of Lade community in Patigi Local Government Area, shortly after evening prayers on Sunday. Reports indicate that the victim was ambushed on his way home from a mosque and shot dead without warning.
The killing has left the community in mourning, with residents remembering Gomina as a respected and devout individual.
Security challenges in Kwara North and South have worsened in recent months, with frequent reports of attacks, kidnappings, and mass displacements. Many villagers in Patigi, Edu, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs have reportedly fled their homes due to escalating bandit activity.
