Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is still a powerful and influential political entity, dismissing any notion of its decline.
Speaking with journalists following the PDP’s Southwest zoning consultative meeting in Lagos on Thursday, Makinde voiced optimism about the party's prospects, stating that committed effort could return it to power.
He pointed to the party's performance in the recent elections as proof of its enduring strength, noting that the PDP finished as the runner-up in most of the 12 states where polls were conducted.
Makinde emphasized the value of internal unity and respectful debate, stating that disagreement is a natural part of democracy but should not become personal. He also made it clear that he avoids engaging in divisive politics, even as the party works to reconcile with members who employ such tactics.
The governor highlighted that the immediate priority is to solidify the party's foundation. He argued that discussing presidential candidates is secondary to first establishing a robust and unified party, without which any broader electoral strategies would be ineffective. The current focus, he said, is on rebuilding a trustworthy and respected party for all Nigerians.
