Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed strong condemnation following the brutal assault on a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Edema Elohor, in Anambra State.
In a statement released on social media, Obi characterized the attack as "barbaric, inhumane, and primitive." He stated that the incident, which was captured in a widely circulated video, left him feeling profound shame and heartbreak.
Reports indicate that armed individuals, alleged to be from a local vigilante group, forcibly entered a lodge housing corps members. The video evidence shows the assailants physically attacking and stripping Elohor.
Obi emphasized that such a violent act represents a direct attack on societal values and humanity itself. He stressed that no community should permit the abuse and humiliation of its citizens, particularly women and vulnerable populations.
The former Governor of Anambra called on law enforcement agencies to immediately identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators to ensure justice is served and to prevent future occurrences. He also advocated for the implementation of stronger protective measures and policies to safeguard all citizens and preserve their dignity.
The event has provoked significant public anger, leading to calls for swift action to guarantee the security of NYSC members serving in the state.
