Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is facing accusations from the Movement for Justice of unlawfully continuing to detain 28 individuals, referred to as the “Makoko 28.”
In a statement released on Monday, the group's convener, Ayo Ademiluyi, claimed that the protesters are being held even though all bail conditions set by the Mobile Court of the Lagos State Task Force have been met.
The group alleges the detainees were apprehended while attempting to attend the state-organized Waterfront Summit. They further accused the state government of a wider agenda to clear waterfront communities like Oworonshoki and Makoko to make way for large-scale development projects, comparing the plan to the transformation of the Lekki area and warning of potential mass displacement of residents.
The Movement for Justice has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the 28 individuals. The group vowed to escalate public demonstrations through all legal means if their demands are not met.
