Political tension in Rivers State may heighten following a warning by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, that he and his supporters could forcibly gain access to the Yakubu Gowon Stadium if permission continues to be denied for political rallies.
Wike issued the warning on Friday in Port Harcourt while speaking at the inauguration of senatorial and local government coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a political group mobilising support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The minister said his group had formally requested approval from the Rivers State Government to use the stadium but was refused, describing the decision as unusual and unacceptable. He warned that any further denial could prompt his supporters to force their way into the facility, insisting that doing so would not result in any serious consequences.
Reaffirming Rivers State’s role in national political mobilisation, Wike stated that the state would continue to lead efforts in demonstrating support for President Tinubu, stressing that political backing must be shown through concrete action rather than words.
He also declared that preparations for future elections had commenced, noting that ward-level political activities would soon follow. According to him, the refusal to grant access to public facilities would not deter his group’s political engagements.
Wike further questioned the commitment of the Rivers State Government to President Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 polls, arguing that political alignment with the federal leadership was essential for attracting federal support and goodwill.
He added that political rewards are earned through loyalty and dedication, not necessarily through financial resources, emphasising that commitment remains the key factor in securing political recognition.
