US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order authorizing fresh tariffs on countries that continue to engage in trade with Iran, intensifying economic pressure on Tehran ahead of a new round of talks scheduled for next week.
The order, signed on Friday, February 6, takes effect from Saturday, February 7. It mandates the imposition of tariffs on goods imported into the United States from any country found to be directly or indirectly purchasing goods or services from Iran. The directive formalizes a warning issued by Trump in January, when he threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on Iran’s trading partners.
Under the order, the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, is tasked with determining the specific tariff levels, although the document references 25 percent as a benchmark. The policy is expected to affect several major economies, including China, Russia, Germany, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.
China, Iran’s largest trading partner, recorded bilateral trade with Tehran worth more than $32 billion in 2024, making it one of the countries likely to feel the impact of the new measures.
