Suspected kidnappers disguised in military uniforms carried out a deadly attack at a construction site in Nunya, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State, on Saturday evening, July 12, 2025. The assailants shot and killed a soldier and a driver working for a Chinese construction company.
Eyewitnesses reported that about six armed men, riding three motorcycles, stormed the site at dusk and opened fire. The driver died instantly, while the soldier providing security was fatally wounded. The attackers reportedly seized the soldier’s rifle before escaping.
Authorities suspect the gunmen belong to a kidnapping syndicate that may have entered Abia from a neighboring state. Unverified sources claim the assault was led by a former military-trained fugitive still on the run.
Security forces swiftly mobilized a search operation in the area. The driver’s body was moved to a nearby hospital, and AK-47 bullet casings were recovered from the scene. Acting on intelligence, one suspect was later arrested in Umuahia North LGA and is currently being questioned. Manhunts for other perpetrators remain underway.
At the time of reporting, the Abia State Police Command had yet to release an official statement. Repeated calls to DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, went unanswered. Security patrols continue in Nunya as investigators intensify efforts to apprehend the attackers and bring them to justice.
