Nigeria’s Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has imposed a hefty ₦766.2 million fine on Multichoice Nigeria for breaching the country’s Data Protection Act. The penalty comes after an investigation into alleged privacy violations and unauthorized transfers of Nigerian users' data across borders.
The probe, which began in the second quarter of 2024, uncovered evidence of non-compliance with data protection regulations. The NDPC found that Multichoice, the parent company of popular pay-TV services like DStv and GOtv, failed to adequately safeguard subscribers' personal information.
This sanction underscores Nigeria’s commitment to enforcing data privacy laws and holding corporations accountable for mishandling customer data. Multichoice has yet to issue an official statement regarding the fine or potential corrective actions.
The penalty serves as a warning to other companies operating in Nigeria to ensure strict adherence to data protection standards or face similar regulatory consequences.
