Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has explained why he was not present at the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday. He stated that flight unavailability and airport closures due to the high number of dignitaries made travel impossible at the time.
Speaking on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, after visiting Buhari’s family to offer condolences, Obi mentioned that the mourning period continues until Thursday, and paying respects during this time is still meaningful. His absence had sparked criticism, but he emphasized the logistical difficulties that prevented his attendance on the burial day.
Obi’s belated visit allowed him to personally express his sympathies to the late president’s family, dispelling rumors about his initial no-show.
