Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stepped down from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), calling the move a difficult but necessary decision. In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and sent to his ward chairman in Jada, Adamawa State, Atiku explained that the PDP no longer aligns with its original ideals.
“I hereby resign my membership from the PDP effective immediately,” he wrote. Atiku, a prominent opposition leader, thanked the party for the opportunities it gave him, including serving as Nigeria’s Vice President for two terms and being its presidential candidate twice. However, he said the party’s current direction conflicts with its founding values, leading to his exit.
As one of the PDP’s founding members, Atiku expressed sadness over the split but cited unresolved disagreements within the party. He concluded by wishing the PDP success in the future.
His departure is expected to reshape Nigeria’s political scene, sparking discussions about the PDP’s stability and the opposition’s cohesion.
