The administration of President Bola Tinubu has greenlit a massive N712.2 billion budget for the comprehensive reconstruction of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The approval was granted during the 7th Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, held on Thursday and chaired by the President.
According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the project will entail a complete structural, mechanical, and electrical overhaul of the international terminal, stripping it down to its bare framework before rebuilding. The renovation is expected to take 22 months to complete.
Keyamo emphasized that the project goes beyond superficial repairs, stating: “Unlike previous patchwork fixes, this rehabilitation will involve dismantling the terminal to its core structure and completely reinstalling all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to deliver a state-of-the-art facility.”
This development follows recent disruptions at the airport, including the repeated closure of Runway 18R/36L for maintenance. Earlier this year, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) shut down the runway just weeks after reopening it from an 11-month repair period.
In related upgrades, FAAN, in partnership with the United Bank for Africa (UBA), recently refurbished the E-wing of the Lagos airport in late 2024. Additionally, the authority acquired four compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses to enhance passenger transportation within the airport premises.
The latest approval signals the federal government’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure to meet global standards.
