In a strongly worded critique, Pastor Tunde Bakare, founder of the Citadel Global Community Church, has accused Nigeria's National Assembly of neglecting its duties amid the nation's escalating security crisis. Speaking during a state of the nation address in Lagos, Bakare lambasted federal lawmakers for failing to take initiative while the United States Congress recently convened a hearing to examine Nigeria's worsening instability.
Bakare’s remarks follow the recent redesignation of Nigeria as a "country of particular concern" by former U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside the November 20 congressional hearing. He expressed dismay that foreign legislators were leading discussions on Nigerian suffering, while elected representatives in Abuja were engrossed in "politicking, posturing, and defecting" ahead of the 2027 elections.
The cleric also condemned Trump's derogatory remarks about Nigeria, describing the language as "the most despicable" used by a world leader and labeling the government's reactive flurry as revealing a chronic lack of urgency. He accused Nigeria's political class of ignoring governance and being "preoccupied with the politics of chaos," while terrorists and bandits operate with impunity.
Bakare, a former presidential aspirant, called the need for external pressure to spur action "a stain on the Nigerian government." He urged President Bola Tinubu to issue a public apology to affected communities within three months, establish a victims register, and provide interim compensation. While acknowledging some government interventions, Bakare emphasized that deeper structural reforms and genuine accountability are essential for lasting peace and national recovery.
