Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to demand accountability from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his campaign promise to fix the country’s electricity challenges.
In a statement shared on social media on January 28, Obi expressed concern that the national power grid has collapsed twice already this year, even though January is not yet over. He recalled that during the 2022 campaign, Tinubu vowed that Nigerians should not re-elect him if he failed to deliver stable electricity within his first four years in office.
Obi noted that the grid reportedly collapsed about 12 times in 2025, a situation he said sharply contradicts the President’s pledge and should be a source of worry for all well-meaning citizens.
He also drew a comparison between Nigeria and Turkey, which he said generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity for a population of about 87 million, while Nigeria, with a much larger population, struggles to generate a fraction of that capacity.
The former Anambra State governor further criticised the President’s frequent foreign trips, urging him to remain in the country and focus on addressing pressing domestic challenges. Obi stressed that Nigerians should prioritise demanding good governance and accountability rather than being overly fixated on future elections, warning that continued neglect of critical issues would only deepen the hardship faced by citizens.
