The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the registration of two new political parties—Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced this development on Thursday, February 5, during INEC’s first regular consultative meeting with political parties held in Abuja.
According to him, the decision followed an extensive evaluation process initiated after the commission received 171 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties. Out of these, 14 groups advanced to the pre-qualification stage.
Amupitan explained that eight associations successfully submitted their required documents through INEC’s dedicated online portal. These included the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA), Abundance Social Party (ASP), African Alliance Party (AAP), Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Green Future Party (GFP), National Democratic Party (NDP), and Peoples Freedom Party (PFP).
Following further screening and verification in line with the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, only two associations met the criteria for final consideration. The commission confirmed that the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) fully satisfied all statutory requirements and was consequently approved for registration.
He further disclosed that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was registered in compliance with a court order issued by the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, in suit No. FHC/LKJ/CS/49/2025, which directed INEC to recognize the party.
Amupitan stated that certificates of registration would be formally presented to the two newly registered political parties in due course.
