In a swift response to recent violent incidents in Oko, the Anambra State Police Command has raided a suspected drug den, arresting six individuals and seizing a large quantity of illicit substances.
The operation, conducted by the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in the early hours of Wednesday, was disclosed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement released on Thursday.
Those arrested include Joseph Chukwura, Emmanuel Chukwuemeka, Ifeanyi Agbanari, Igwe Chineche, Mmadufor Chinecherem, Chibueze Chukwumankpam, and Mmadubom Uchenna, all males aged between 24 and 35.
The raid comes amid rising tensions in Oko, a community hosting the Federal Polytechnic, following a series of brutal attacks. On June 21, 2025, a student was gunned down in broad daylight by suspected cultists, sparking public outrage. Just days earlier, armed assailants had stormed the area, killing at least four people, injuring seven, and abducting two others.
While the motives remain unclear, authorities suspect cult-related violence and drug trafficking may be fueling the unrest. Residents and student groups have called for urgent action, citing growing insecurity in the area.
SP Ikenga stated that the arrested suspects are being interrogated and may provide critical leads into the recent violence. He emphasized the Command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks in Oko and its environs.
“This operation is part of our intensified efforts to curb crime and expose those behind these disturbing incidents,” Ikenga said. The police urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
