The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has announced plans to take legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a raid on its premises early Sunday. EFCC operatives from the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 conducted the operation at the library’s Rounda fun spot, where a "Wet & Rave Splash Extravaganza" event was taking place. Reports indicate that 93 young individuals were arrested, 18 vehicles seized, and mobile phones confiscated.
The EFCC stated on social media platform X that the raid was based on credible intelligence linking the attendees to internet-related crimes. A widely circulated video showed scenes of chaos as partygoers fled during the operation, which reportedly began around 2 a.m.
In a sharp rebuttal, OOPL Ventures Managing Director Vitalis Ortese criticized the raid, calling it an unjustified and aggressive intrusion. He alleged that more than 50 armed EFCC officials, led by an operative named “Olapade,” forcefully entered the venue, fired shots, and issued threats to attendees. Ortese claimed the incident caused panic, leading to injuries as people tried to escape. He described the operation as an unlawful violation of private property rights and a breach of the rights of both the organization and event attendees.
Ortese clarified that the gathering was a well-publicized private event with security arrangements in place, including police officers stationed at OOPL’s entrance and additional personnel from Kemta Police Station. He emphasized that neither OOPL security nor the police were notified beforehand, and no warrant was presented by the EFCC. When questioned, the operatives reportedly ignored concerns, insisting they were carrying out their duties.
OOPL has demanded an immediate explanation and a public apology from the EFCC for the alleged rights violations and harm caused to attendees. The management warned that legal action would be pursued if their demands are not met. An internal investigation into the incident is reportedly underway.
As of now, the EFCC has not issued a response to OOPL’s allegations.
