Istanbul prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for 46 individuals as part of a deepening investigation into illegal sports betting, a scandal that has severely shaken Turkish football. Among those ordered into custody are 29 professional football players.
Authorities state that 27 of the detained athletes are under suspicion for wagering on matches involving their own clubs. Notably included is Galatasaray defender Metehan Baltacı, who had previously received a nine-month suspension this month in connection to the same case.
The probe escalated significantly in November with the pre-trial detention of six referees and the president of top-tier club Eyüpspor. While prosecutors withheld the identities of 26 other players accused of betting on their own teams, they disclosed that Fenerbahçe midfielder Mert Hakan Yandaş is alleged to have placed bets using another person's account.
